Issues of having Bats in the House

Bats, once they become residents of your house, are not just an attractive nuisance. They can provide potential concerns for you and your family, beginning with:

  • Bat Presence – People, especially the elder folk, have varying beliefs about bats. The presence of bats may signal bad luck or misfortune, as they are thought to be the messengers of the devil or some evil being. The superstitious beliefs may sound funny but eventually, they can get annoying especially when you are more inclined to believe in scientific explanations, thus causing a difficult time between you and your older family members to decide on how to get rid of the bats around.
  • Bat Roosting Sites – Bats usually go for roosting sites inside the house, such as livestock quarters, outbuildings, human dwellings and warehouses. Some bats meanwhile go for semi-enclosed, partly-sheltered, and open structural areas for roosting. Once they have chosen their roosting sites, bats can provide various problems, beginning with public health issues, economic concerns and aesthetic effects. If not taken seriously, a residential building can be a candidate for demolition once discovered that bats reside on some of the rooms and dwellings of the structure.
  • Bat Rub Marks – As part of their “hygiene,” bats rub themselves on the surface of walls, woodwork and bricks in the place of their chosen dwellings. These rub marks have a rather smooth, polished look, while the stained areas have a sticky feel, with some bat hairs stuck. The marks are also distinct due to their yellowish-brown color. The gloss of the marks is caused by the oils of the bat fur combined with other secretions as well as dust and other dirt coming from other bats that have passed that surface. These stains can be difficult to clean.
  • Bat Noise – Bats produce disturbing sounds due to vocalizing, scratching, crawling and grooming. The flaps they make then climbing attics or going through walls, under eaves and between floors also create unique sounds which can keep a person wide awake at night. Bats usually become noisy during hot, muggy days while resting in the attic, before leaving for their nighttime stroll, and when they return before dawn.
  • Guano and Bat Urine – Bats relieve almost everywhere. When you visit a roosting place of bats, expect a lot of fecal pellets everywhere on the floors of the house. Fecal pellets meanwhile found inside the walls may be a sign of rats, mice and roaches present. Bat droppings meanwhile are usually friable, elongated and segmented. Bat refuse produce a real awful odor especially when it begins to decompose. You can even smell the unpleasant scent from outside. The same kind of smell also takes place when other animals die in places which are hard to reach. In time, the odor may entice arthropods to flock the structure and cause further damage too.
